Prayer Life

Our Lady of the Visitation Parish is actively working in the world to inspire and encourage prayer in our daily lives. What better way to start this communion with our God than to express our gratefulness for all that we have. See what some of our parishioners are grateful for."

Praying to Mary, the Mother of God Bookmark

~Blessed Virgin Mary ~ Our Lady of Light ~

Whatever name you call her, Mary the Mother of God, is our heavenly mother. Just as your mother cares for you, so too does the Blessed Virgin Mary. She intercedes for you to her son, Jesus.

Maybe the most common traditional prayer, the Hail Mary, is the only prayer you know (or can think of) that centers around Mary. But in fact, there are numerous Marian prayers that help us to reflect on her life and the life of her Son. Two of these prayers, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Rosary, help us to meditate using repetitive formats said on rosary beads. Another common prayer, the Memorare, may be easier to memorize over a short time:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

GLORY!

As Catholic Christians we are called to give glory to God, but, how do we do that?

Here at the parish we’ve been celebrating a ‘Year of Prayer’ by identifying different types of prayer each month.  April’s theme is ‘Glory’.  It’s easy to say ‘Glory to God’, but how can we/I do that?

In 1 Corinthians 10:31, St. Paul tells us “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

So, when do we give God glory?

…when we forgive that person who has wronged us

…when we pray for others who are going through a rough time

…when we go out of our way to visit a sick family member or friend

…when we pray for and forgive our enemies

…when we speak calmly to someone we would like to scream at

…when we notice, appreciate and thank God for a beautiful sunset, or a beautiful flower, or a

     majestic mountain range

…when we give something up we want/need so that someone else can have something they

     want/need

 …when we love one another

During the month of April let’s be especially mindful of giving glory to God in all aspects of our life.
